Winter Bid Restructure & Operational Updates
Update on the Winter Bid restructure proposal, company commitments, mandatory overtime, staffing, and ongoing INFOR and scheduling issues.
Good afternoon, brothers and sisters,
I just completed a meeting with upper management regarding our proposal for a restructured Winter Bid. I want to provide everyone with an update, especially since many members have been asking about the meeting and where things currently stand.
Winter Bid Proposal
We presented a proposal that we believe would have created a better and more efficient Winter Bid structure for our operation and our members.
Unfortunately, the proposal was rejected after our best efforts to get it implemented. The primary issue raised by management was the deicing operation, which remains their major concern with the proposed structure.
While we were disappointed that the full proposal was not accepted, the discussion did result in several commitments from the company to look at other ways to improve the bid and address the operational problems we continue to experience.
The company has agreed to:
- Look at grouping the weekend zones in the manner presented by the Union.
- Explore opening actual bid lines structured around those zones for members who may want the opportunity to move around.
- Review part-time Crew Chief opportunities.
- Review the current mandatory overtime structure.
Mandatory Overtime
We also had a detailed discussion about why mandatory overtime continues to occur at the levels we have been seeing.
Management acknowledged that this continues to be a planning issue. The company plans to develop daily staffing templates that identify how many employees are actually needed to operate ramp driving, bag room, and other areas throughout the week.
The goal is to establish a more accurate staffing model based on the actual operational needs of each day, rather than continuing to see situations where 200 or more employees are placed on mandatory overtime on a Wednesday night, for example.
We will be watching this closely to make sure the new process actually addresses the problem.
INFOR & Scheduling Issues
We also discussed the ongoing challenges with INFOR and scheduling.
Management will be looking into several issues that members have brought forward, including:
- Why scheduling is telling employees they cannot approve certain requests through the billboard.
- Why shifts are not being cut or adjusted to properly match TL requirements and keep employees working their scheduled Saturday/Sunday assignments.
- The use and handling of partials.
- Our request to return to the one-hour overlap for employees working in the same work area.
Management is expected to have additional information for us by Thursday regarding these issues.
Moving Forward
While we did not get the Winter Bid restructure we fought for, we are not walking away from the issues that led us to make the proposal in the first place.
The Union brought these concerns forward because the current structure is creating operational problems, unnecessary mandatory overtime, scheduling issues, and frustration for our members.
The company has now committed to reviewing several of these issues, and we will hold them accountable to those commitments.
We will continue pushing for solutions that improve the operation while protecting our members and creating a fairer and more workable bid structure.
I know many of you have been asking for an update, and I wanted to make sure you heard directly from us. I will provide another update once we receive the information expected later this week.
Thank you for your continued patience, support, and for continuing to speak up. We hear you, and we will keep pushing.
